What's New
November 2002
  • During the week of October 28 through November 1, 2002 the Marine Corps University – Wildland Fire Leadership Workshop was held in Quantico, Virginia.  The intent of the workshop is to expose wildland firefighters to proven leadership development techniques so that they can assess the potential to transfer and use these techniques in wildland fire training efforts.  This is the third such workshop to be sponsored by the Leadership Committee.  The 16 wildland fire attendees had the opportunity to participate in leadership development techniques from three different schools within the Marine Corps University curriculum: a Staff Ride with the Command and Staff College, Sand Table Exercises at The Basic School, and the Leadership Reaction Course at Officer Candidate School.  See trip report for details.
  • The Training Working Team approved the Leadership Committee recommendations to implement the five level L-course curriculum and also to set a date for eliminating the current S-201/281 and S-301/381 courses from the NWCG Publication Management System.  At the end of September 2003, the Publication Management System will no longer stock those packages.  The L-280 and L-380 courses will take their place.  Issue Paper 35  Issue Paper 38  Issue Paper 39

October 2002
  • Test courses for the L-280 Followership to Leadership training package have been scheduled for the Winter of 2003.  This will be the summative evaluation for this course.  After the package is approved it should be available in the NWCG Publication Management System in the Spring of 2003.
  • The first phase of the Leadership Toolbox is scheduled to be available by January 2003.  The Leadership Toolbox is an on-line resource and is part of this website.  It will provide an opportunity for self-directed leadership learning outside the context of formal classroom training through internet access to a set of reference and assessment tools.  The first tools are currently available for use...the Professional Reading Program and the Tactical Decision Games Workbook.

June 2002
  • Human Factors on the Fireline has been approved as the first available course in the new leadership curriculum.  The course is currently stocked in the NWCG Publication Management System as PMS 492.  The course will be identified as L-180 and it will be the entry-level foundation course in the new L course curriculum.  Course packages will be relabeled as L-180 when current stock is exhausted.
